Diablo 4 Season 12 has just launched. Blizzard's primary objective for this season is to entice players to return and to lay the groundwork for the upcoming expansion—Lord of Hatred—scheduled for release on April 28th. To this end, Season 12 introduces several exciting new features.

Players can now transform into "The Butcher" by winning PvP battles or by collecting specific items. Once transformed, you gain access to The Butcher's unique abilities, which you can use to slay enemies and acquire a Season 12-exclusive currency: "Fresh Meat." This currency can be exchanged for various cosmetic items—a welcome free perk for us players; after all, who doesn't love getting free stuff?

Furthermore, this transformation mechanic can be leveraged for rapid leveling. Efficiency is significantly boosted—particularly within PvP zones—allowing you to reach level 40 in under two hours. Blizzard has utilized this feature to mitigate the drawback of this season's shorter duration, ensuring that players can quickly experience the seasonal content despite the condensed timeframe, thereby alleviating the tedium often associated with the leveling grind.

This season also features an upcoming crossover event with Doom, offering players the chance to acquire some truly cool-looking gear cosmetics. As a "free-to-play" player myself, however, this crossover is clearly not for me, as the associated cosmetic gear comes with a rather steep price tag. Much as I would love to roleplay as the "Doom Slayer"—complete with a "Cacodemon" pet floating in tow—my wallet simply isn't deep enough.

Before Season 12 officially launched, I fully expected Blizzard to make the crossover skins available for free. My reasoning was that, in an effort to maintain the game's momentum, they could simply design the event around grinding for a special currency—thereby encouraging players to log significant playtime.

Disappointingly, however, Blizzard chose not to go that route; instead, they slapped a specific price tag on the skins. It seems they were simply too eager to cash in on us—a move that stands in stark contrast to the "free-to-play" philosophy they typically champion in their marketing. Moreover, I found that the process of acquiring Diablo 4 Gold in the game is incredibly tedious—yet it is an absolutely essential part of the gameplay.Consequently, I feel somewhat disappointed by this crossover event; for the vast majority of players, earning rewards through gameplay remains far more appealing than spending real money.

Finally, I'd like to offer a brief critique of Diablo 4's seasonal system itself. The introduction of mechanics that feel somewhat "unfinished" can have a significant negative impact on the player experience—most notably the rigid distinction between "Seasonal Characters" and "Eternal Characters." With every new season update, players are forced to start the leveling process from scratch; unless you reach level 60, you remain locked out of experiencing the game's "Endgame" content.

In reality, Blizzard could easily have designed the game so that players could experience seasonal content without having to grind levels. Given the diverse player base—some enjoy the leveling process, while others simply want to experience fresh content—retaining players requires offering varied gameplay formats rather than a monotonous, one-size-fits-all leveling grind. However, Season 12 marks a significant improvement in this regard, as players can now level up quickly to access and enjoy the seasonal content.

Overall, Season 12 of Diablo 4 has proven somewhat effective; however, it lacks sufficient appeal to entice veteran players to return (partly because the crossover gear is prohibitively expensive). To sustain the game's momentum and popularity, Blizzard will need to demonstrate a greater degree of sincerity.
